I've been with Sprint for about 8 years at this point. I've not had an issue with call quality except when visiting my parents a few years back. However, that was expected as they live in the boonies and there was no cell service of any type.

In the past two years, call quality has been spotless in RDU. I don't think I've dropped a call in the past year. On occasion I'll have a missed call or a voicemail with no missed call. Not sure if that's an issue with my hearing or the phone.

With respect to the customer service issue: In those 8 years I have not once experienced the poor customer service everyone else has. Either I'm lucky or oblivious to poor customer service. Or those claims have been the product of hyperbole.

All that said, I think that Sprint realized they were sinking into the realm of the Mom & Pop cell carriers that only functions in a small area, and saw an opportunity to team up with another seemingly floundering franchise: Palm. Had Palm been in better financial shape, and had the other carriers not had the flagship phones they have (AT&T with the iPhone. T-Mobile with the G1. Verizon with the Blackberry Storm) then perhaps Palm would do a mass release independent of any exclusive deal. That doesn't seem to be the case. Sprint's flagship phone currently is the Instinct. While it is a pretty nice phone with a number of features, it's no 'Smart Phone'. I believe the phrase is that it's a Feature Phone. the Pre, to my understanding, is geared to be a Smart phone with feature phone ease of use.

I think I started rambling. I like Sprint. The Pre looks sweet. If my wife lets me, I may grab one.
